A downtown Toronto celebration of folk, blues and roots music will return for its 23rd year beginning on Feb. 14 through to Feb. 16.
Whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering Winterfolk for the first time, organizers said this year’s musical showcase offers something for everyone.
Taking place at the Tranzac Club, the three-day event will boast a mix of performances from established artists, emerging talent and community-driven acts.
“It takes a community to build a festival, and Winterfolk’s success has been a true partnership with our fans, audiences, artists and supporters,” festival founder Brian Gladstone said in a press release. “Together, we’ve grown the festival, enriched the roots music scene, and strengthened the Toronto music community.”
The festival has grown from a grassroots effort to a respected event that draws more than 150 performers and a diverse audience.
Like many festivals, Winterfolk said it faces challenges as it continues to recover from the pandemic.
This year’s festival focuses on revitalization.
“Amid declining resources and shrinking audiences, Winterfolk is focused on rebuilding for a sustainable and vibrant future by presenting young emerging talent— a voice from the future that ensures the evolution and vitality of roots music,” Gladstone said.
Highlights this year include an opening night Valentine’s Day performance entitled “Valentine Voices: A Night of Female Power,” featuring Lynn Miles, Melanie Peterson and more artists to be announced.
Day 2 will include a full lineup of fan-favourite artists and a “The Blues of Winterfolk” showcase. Additional workshops and guitar sessions round out the day.
On Feb. 16, the festival will shine a spotlight on community music organizations and local talent.
The festival is partnering with the Toronto Folk Festival, Brampton Folk Festival and Seneca College music program to amplify their work.
Beyond performances, the Winterfolk festival includes workshops, seminars and discussions to engage audiences.
The festival begins on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. and lasts until 11 p.m. On Feb. 15, the festival will begin again around noon, with artists rocking out until 11 p.m. Winterfolk’s final day, Feb. 16, will see performances from noon to 9 p.m.
